Blue Lagoon Cyprus — crystal clear turquoise water with boats anchored near Cape Greco

What is the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most beautiful natural spots in the entire Mediterranean. It is a sheltered turquoise bay on the east coast of Cyprus, tucked between dramatic limestone cliffs near Protaras — between Ayia Napa and the tip of Cape Greco.

The water here is unlike anything I have seen in 30 years of living on this coastline. It is an extraordinary shade of turquoise — the kind you see in photos and assume has been colour-corrected. It has not. The clarity is exceptional — visibility of 20–30 metres underwater is normal. On a calm day you can see the sandy bottom clearly from the boat.

The bay is completely sheltered by cliffs on three sides, which means the water is almost always perfectly calm — even when there are waves elsewhere on the coast. It is genuinely one of those places that takes your breath away the first time you see it. And the second time. And the third.

Important: The Blue Lagoon is not accessible by road. There is no path, no car park, no beach to walk to. The only way to get there is by boat. This is what makes it feel so special — like a secret place.

💡 Alex's Honest Take

In peak July and August, the Blue Lagoon can get busy — multiple boats arriving at once. If you want it quieter, choose a morning departure. The water is always beautiful regardless of crowds. Sea turtle sightings are most common early morning before the boats arrive.

What to Expect There

🌊 The Water

Prepare to be genuinely amazed. The colour of the water at the Blue Lagoon is an extraordinary turquoise — almost luminous on a sunny day. The clarity is exceptional. Looking down from the boat or the surface while swimming, you can see the sandy bottom clearly even in deep water. Underwater visibility regularly reaches 20–30 metres.

🐢 Sea Turtles

The Blue Lagoon is one of the best places in Cyprus to spot loggerhead sea turtles in the wild. They come to feed in the calm, clear water and are regularly spotted by boat passengers and swimmers. Do not chase or touch them — observe from a respectful distance and the experience is unforgettable.

🤿 Swimming & Snorkelling

The Blue Lagoon is perfect for snorkelling — the calm water, incredible visibility and marine life make it one of the best snorkelling spots in Cyprus. Most boat trips provide basic snorkel equipment. Bring your own mask for the best experience. The water is cool and refreshing even in peak summer.

⚓ What the Boat Stop is Like

On most day cruises, the Blue Lagoon swim stop lasts 30–60 minutes. The boat anchors and you jump in from the deck or use the swim ladder. There is no beach — it is open water swimming off the boat. Non-swimmers can stay on deck and admire the view, which is spectacular in itself.

💡 Bring a Mask

Snorkelling at the Blue Lagoon is genuinely one of the highlights of any Ayia Napa holiday. The basic masks provided on most trips are fine, but if you have your own mask you will get a significantly better experience. A small dry bag to protect your phone is also essential — you will want photos from in the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you walk to the Blue Lagoon in Cyprus?
No — the Blue Lagoon is not accessible by road or by a simple walk. It is located in a sheltered bay between dramatic cliffs near Cape Greco that has no road access. The only practical way to reach it is by boat from Ayia Napa Harbour. There is a very long and difficult hike along the Cape Greco coastal path but this is not recommended — the boat trip takes 50 minutes and gives a far better experience.
Is the Blue Lagoon really that blue?
Yes — genuinely. The extraordinary turquoise colour is real and not colour-corrected in photos. It is caused by the combination of white sandy bottom, shallow clear water, and the specific limestone geology of the coastline. On a sunny day the colour is luminous and almost unreal. It is one of those places that looks even better in person than in photos.
Are there sea turtles at the Blue Lagoon?
Yes — loggerhead sea turtles are regularly spotted at the Blue Lagoon. They come to feed in the calm, clear water. Sightings are common but not guaranteed — early morning departures give the best chance before the bay gets busy with boats. Do not swim towards or touch turtles — observe calmly and let them swim to you.
How long do you spend at the Blue Lagoon on a boat trip?
On most shared day cruises, the Blue Lagoon swim stop is 30–60 minutes. Private charters let you stay as long as you want. The Blue Star Family Cruise typically includes around 45 minutes at the Blue Lagoon. It sounds short but with the journey there, the sea caves stop and the swim stop, the full trip is 4 hours.
Is the Blue Lagoon suitable for non-swimmers?
Yes — non-swimmers can enjoy the Blue Lagoon by staying on the boat deck. The views of the turquoise water and limestone cliffs from the boat are spectacular even without swimming. Life jackets are available on all boats. Most boat trips also have a swim ladder so you can enter the water safely even if you are not a confident swimmer.
