Nissi Beach is the most famous beach in Ayia Napa — and probably the most famous beach in Cyprus. It consistently appears on "best beaches in Europe" lists and for good reason. The white sand is powdery soft, the water is an extraordinary shade of turquoise and the beach itself is beautiful.
But let me give you the honest local picture. Nissi is not a quiet, relaxing beach. In July and August it is absolutely packed — sunbed to sunbed, music from multiple beach bars, jet skis in the water, parasailing overhead. It is energetic, lively and a lot of fun if that is what you are looking for. If you want peace and quiet, this is not your beach.
The unique thing about Nissi is the sandbar. At low tide, a sandbar appears connecting the main beach to the small island offshore — you can walk across it ankle-deep in water. It is genuinely magical, especially in the early morning before the crowds arrive.
Nissi Beach at 7–8am in summer is one of the most beautiful sights in Cyprus. The sandbar is visible, the water is mirror-calm and perfectly clear, and there is almost nobody there. Go early, swim, take your photos — then head back to town for breakfast before the crowds arrive. A completely different experience to the busy midday beach.
At low tide, a natural sandbar appears between the main beach and the small island (Nissi Island) about 100 metres offshore. You can literally walk to the island through ankle-deep water. It is one of those genuinely special natural phenomena — the combination of the sandbar, the turquoise water on either side and the island beyond makes for extraordinary photos. The sandbar is most visible in the morning.

Nissi Beach has the best selection of water sports in Ayia Napa — pretty much everything is available right on the beach.

Relaxed way to explore the water around the island. Great for families with young children.
The water around Nissi Island has good snorkelling. Hire a mask on the beach or bring your own.
Nissi Beach is about 3km from Ayia Napa town centre — roughly a 35-40 minute walk along the coastal road. It is a pleasant walk in the early morning or evening but not recommended in the midday summer heat. The route is straightforward — head west from the harbour along the coast road.
A taxi from Ayia Napa centre to Nissi Beach costs €5–8 and takes about 5 minutes. Taxis are plentiful in town. I can arrange a pre-booked taxi for you on WhatsApp if needed.
There is a local bus service that stops at Nissi Beach from the town centre. Check the local bus timetable on arrival. The bus is cheap but infrequent — not always reliable for a beach day where timing matters.
Renting a buggy and driving yourself to Nissi is the most fun option — and gives you the flexibility to arrive early, leave whenever you want and combine with Cape Greco on the same day. Buggy rental starts from €90/day for a 2-seater.
There is free parking behind Nissi Beach but it fills up very fast in July and August — often by 9am on peak days. If you're driving or buggying, arrive early or be prepared to park further away and walk. Alternatively, taxi there and back — at €5–8 each way it removes all parking stress.
