boat trips, restaurants, and how to get there from Ayia Napa. Written by a 30-year local resident.">
Protaras is Ayia Napa's quieter, more refined neighbour — about 15 minutes up the coast. Where Ayia Napa is loud, lively and young, Protaras is calmer, more upscale and predominantly family-oriented. It attracts a different crowd — couples, families with young children and people who want the beautiful Cyprus coastline without the nightclub soundtrack.
Protaras has some of the best beaches in Cyprus — Fig Tree Bay is consistently rated one of the best beaches in Europe. The water here is just as spectacular as Ayia Napa but the beaches are less crowded and the atmosphere is significantly more relaxed.
I have been living on this coastline for 30 years and Protaras genuinely surprises people who expect it to be less impressive than Ayia Napa. In many ways the beaches are better, the restaurants are more authentic and the whole experience is more grown-up. If you are based in Ayia Napa, a day trip to Protaras is absolutely worth it — especially Fig Tree Bay and Konnos Bay.
If you're staying in Ayia Napa, don't skip Protaras. Rent a buggy and drive the coastal road between the two resorts — it is one of the most beautiful drives in Cyprus, passing Cape Greco, Konnos Bay and the Protaras coastline. Do it in the morning for the best light.
Consistently rated one of the best beaches in Europe. Fine white sand, shallow turquoise water, a small island offshore and excellent facilities. Named after a fig tree that once grew on the island. Less crowded than Nissi Beach and arguably more beautiful. A must-visit.
A small, sheltered bay between Ayia Napa and Protaras — technically on the border of both. Protected by hills on three sides, the water is always perfectly calm. Extraordinary turquoise colour. Smaller and more intimate than Fig Tree Bay. My personal favourite on the whole coastline.
A long sandy beach in the heart of Protaras. Very calm shallow water, perfect for young children. Well-organised with sunbeds, restaurants and facilities. Faces east so the name is apt — spectacular sunrises if you're an early riser.
Less well-known than Fig Tree Bay but equally beautiful — and much less crowded. Crystal clear water, good snorkelling, and a more authentic local atmosphere. Worth the short walk from the main Protaras strip.
The best boat trip in Protaras is the Shirley Valentine — a private family boat run by Captain Doros and his son Kornilios. 4.9 stars across 192 reviews. The whole boat is yours (up to 24 people) for €400 for 3 hours — that's under €20 per person for a group. Two swim stops: the Blue Lagoon and Turtle Bay where wild sea turtles are commonly spotted. Bar on board, Bluetooth music, departs from Pernera Harbour near the Golden Coast Hotel. Full details and booking here.
The drive from Ayia Napa to Protaras along the coastal road is one of the best drives in Cyprus. Rent a buggy, take the scenic route past Cape Greco and Konnos Bay, spend the morning at Fig Tree Bay and drive back for sunset. A perfect day.
The iconic Protaras windmill on the hill above the resort offers the best panoramic views of the Protaras coastline and Fig Tree Bay. Easy walk up from the main strip. Spectacular at sunset — one of the best viewpoints on the east coast of Cyprus.
The waters around Protaras have excellent visibility and marine life — better in some spots than Ayia Napa. Konnos Bay and the area around Cape Greco are particularly good for snorkelling. Dive centres operate from Protaras harbour.
Protaras has excellent restaurants — slightly less touristy than the main Ayia Napa strip. The harbour area has good fresh fish tavernas. For the most authentic Cypriot food on the whole coastline, ask me for my local recommendations on WhatsApp.
The most common question I get. Here is the honest comparison:
My honest take: For families and couples, Protaras edges it on beaches and atmosphere. For young groups and those who want nightlife and activities, Ayia Napa wins. The best option for many people is staying in Ayia Napa and doing a day trip to Protaras — you get the best of both.
