Best Things to Do in Ayia Napa with Kids

I've been living here for over 30 years and watched thousands of families come through Ayia Napa. These are the activities that genuinely work well with children — not just the tourist traps.

Blue Star Family Cruise Ayia Napa with kids
⭐ Top Pick for Families

Blue Star Family Day Cruise

The single best activity for families in Ayia Napa right now. A brand new 28-metre vessel with 3 decks, a water slide, magicians, face painting for the kids and a proper Cypriot lunch included. You cruise to Cape Greco, the Blue Lagoon and Turtle Bay — the most beautiful stretch of coastline in Cyprus. Kids absolutely love it.

Glass Bottom Boat

Perfect for younger children — a short, gentle cruise with a glass panel in the hull so kids can watch the sea life underneath without getting wet or snorkelling. Routes pass the famous sea caves and Cape Greco coastline. The most affordable boat experience in Ayia Napa and genuinely magical for young children seeing fish and sea turtles up close for the first time.

Cape Greco & Sea Caves by Buggy

Rent a 4-seat buggy and explore Cape Greco National Park at your own pace. The sea caves are accessible by a short walk and the views are unlike anything you'll see anywhere else in the Med. Kids go absolutely wild for the buggies — it's a proper adventure. Go early morning before the heat kicks in. The bridge of love, natural sea arches and the Blue Lagoon viewpoint are all within easy reach.

💡 Alex's Family Tip

If you can only do one paid activity with young kids, make it the Blue Star Family Cruise. It combines the boat trip, the Blue Lagoon, lunch and kids entertainment all in one. For older kids (8+), WaterWorld is the winner — they'll talk about it for years. WhatsApp me and I'll help you plan the right combination for your kids' ages.

Best Beaches for Families

Ayia Napa's beaches are perfect for children — calm Mediterranean water, no big waves, sandy bottoms. Here's which beach suits your family best.

🏅

Makronissos Beach

Best for: Toddlers & Young Kids

My top recommendation for families with young children. Very shallow water for a long distance from shore, calm and safe. Excellent facilities — sunbeds, changing rooms, showers, tavernas. Not too crowded compared to Nissi. A 10-minute drive from the main strip.

🌊

Nissi Beach

Best for: Older Kids & Teenagers

The most famous beach in Ayia Napa. Great for older kids and teens who want water sports, inflatables and a lively beach atmosphere. The sandbar at low tide is magical. Gets very busy in July and August — arrive early. A 10-minute walk or short taxi from town.

🐢

Sandy Bay (Agia Thekla)

Best for: Babies & Quiet Families

A smaller, quieter beach a few km from Ayia Napa town. Much less crowded than Nissi, calm shallow water and a relaxed atmosphere. Sea turtles occasionally visit this stretch of coastline — a magical experience if you're lucky. Great for families who want peace and quiet.

🏖️

Protaras / Fig Tree Bay

Best for: All Ages

Just 15 minutes from Ayia Napa, Fig Tree Bay is consistently rated one of Europe's best beaches. Crystal clear turquoise water, soft sand and calm conditions. Perfect for families — much quieter and more upscale than Ayia Napa. Worth a day trip at minimum. I can arrange a taxi or buggy rental to get there.

Local Tips for Family Holidays

30 years of watching families come through Ayia Napa. Here's what actually makes the difference.

01

Stay away from the strip

The nightlife strip (Nissi Avenue) is loud until 5am in summer. Stay in the quieter eastern side of town near Makronissos or ask me to recommend a family hotel — you'll sleep much better and the beaches are closer.

02

Best months for families

May, June and September are perfect — warm enough to swim, not overwhelmingly hot, less crowded and cheaper. July and August are peak season — very hot (35°C+), very busy. Fine for older kids but tough with babies and toddlers.

03

Book boat trips in advance

The Blue Star Family Cruise fills up fast in peak season — especially July and August. Book at least 2–3 days ahead. WhatsApp me with your dates and I'll secure your spots immediately.

04

Pack sun cream from home

Cyprus sun is intense even in May and September. Sun cream is available locally but expensive. Bring a good SPF 50 for the kids from home. Hats and rash vests for young children are essential — the midday sun (12–3pm) is strong.

05

Sea turtles are real

Loggerhead sea turtles nest on the beaches around Cape Greco and Ayia Napa. You can genuinely spot them in the sea, especially early morning. The glass bottom boat trip gives the best chance of seeing them up close — kids go absolutely mad for it.

06

Car seat & buggy planning

If you're hiring a car, request a child seat in advance — they run out. Taxi drivers are required to have car seats on request but always confirm when you book. If exploring with young children, a compact buggy/pram is fine — most areas have pavements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ayia Napa good for families with young children?
Yes — genuinely. The beaches are calm with shallow water, the weather is predictable and warm, and there are excellent family activities from water parks to boat trips. The key is staying in the right part of town (away from the nightlife strip) and visiting in May, June or September rather than peak July/August if your kids are young.
What age is WaterWorld suitable for?
WaterWorld has dedicated areas for young children including splash zones and gentle rides suitable from age 2–3 upwards. Most of the main slides have a minimum height of 120cm. It's a full day out for all ages — toddlers in the shallow areas while older kids and adults do the big slides.
Is the Blue Star Family Cruise suitable for babies and toddlers?
Yes — the cruise is specifically designed with families in mind. There's a kids' menu, soft drinks included for children, magicians and face painting on board, and the vessel is large and stable (28 metres, 3 decks). Infants are welcome. The 4-hour cruise includes swim stops so you'll want to supervise toddlers near the water.
Is Ayia Napa safe for kids?
Very safe. Cyprus has an extremely low crime rate and Ayia Napa specifically is well-policed and tourist-friendly. The beaches are calm Mediterranean water with no dangerous currents or waves. The nightlife is concentrated in one area of town which you can easily avoid. I've never had any safety concerns for families staying here in 30+ years.
What is the best time of year to visit Ayia Napa with kids?
May, June and September are the sweet spot — warm enough to swim (25–30°C), less crowded, cheaper accommodation and the sea is calm and clear. July and August are hot (35°C+), very busy and more expensive. Fine for older kids but tiring for babies and toddlers in the heat.
Can I see sea turtles in Ayia Napa with kids?
Yes! Loggerhead sea turtles are common around the Cape Greco coastline. The glass bottom boat trip gives the best chance of seeing them — you can watch them swimming underneath the boat. Early morning snorkelling near Cape Greco also gives good sightings. It's one of the most memorable wildlife experiences for children anywhere in Europe.
