Ayia Napa has 14 Blue Flag beaches — more than almost anywhere else in the Mediterranean. The water here is genuinely extraordinary: warm, clear and a shade of turquoise that makes people think their photos have been edited. They haven't.
But not all beaches are equal. Some are packed, loud and full of watersports sellers. Others are tucked away in national parks where you can hear nothing but the sea. This guide covers the five beaches I recommend most — with honest advice on who each one is right for.
| Beach | Vibe | Best For | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nissi Beach | 🎉 Lively | Everyone, parties | Very busy in peak |
| Makronissos | 😌 Relaxed | Families, couples | Moderate |
| Vathia Gonia | 🏘 Local | All ages, quieter | Quieter than Nissi |
| Konnos Bay | 🌿 Scenic | Couples, nature lovers | Busy weekends |
| Cape Greco | 🪨 Wild | Adventurers, snorkelers | Light |

💬 Ask a Local on WhatsAppNissi Beach is the most famous beach in Cyprus and it earns that reputation completely. The water is shallow enough to walk out 100 metres without it reaching your waist, the sand is white and soft, and the colour of the sea has to be seen to be believed. There's even a small island you can walk to through the shallows — that's where the name comes from (Nissi means "small island" in Greek).
The beach is made up of two connecting bays — one long and lively, one smaller and slightly quieter. The Nissi Bay Beach Bar at one end runs daily beach parties from May to October with resident DJs, foam parties and special guest appearances. If you want the full Ayia Napa experience in one place, this is it.
It does get very crowded in July and August. Arrive before 9am to get a good spot with a sunbed. Mornings are calmer — the parties tend to kick off in the early afternoon.
Makronissos is a dolphin-shaped peninsula with three small connecting bays, each slightly different in character. The water is crystal clear and very shallow, which makes it perfect for families with young children. It's noticeably less hectic than Nissi Beach — the same quality of water and sand, but a calmer atmosphere.
At the tip of the peninsula there are ancient Makronissos Tombs dating back thousands of years, which you can explore for free. It's a surprisingly interesting stop and gives the beach a unique character you don't find anywhere else in the area. A short walk along the shore connects you to Landa Beach and eventually all the way to the Nissi Beach area via a promenade.
Most tourists have never heard of Vathia Gonia — and that's exactly why locals love it. Known as Sandy Bay, it's a 300-metre stretch of fine golden sand with calm, clear water and a natural rocky bay that breaks the waves. It has everything you need without the chaos of Nissi Beach.
It's practically in the centre of Ayia Napa, which makes it the most convenient beach in the area — you can walk here from most hotels in town. A pedestrian walkway runs along the beach connecting it to the small harbour. The beach is also equipped with a Seatrac system — an innovative tracked chair that gives autonomous sea access to people with mobility difficulties, which is rare and impressive.
Konnos Bay is the most beautiful beach in the entire area — and I mean that. Tucked inside the Cape Greco National Park between Ayia Napa and Protaras, it's sheltered on both sides by dramatic pine-covered cliffs that drop down to a small, 200-metre bay of white sand and multi-layered turquoise water. Private yachts drop anchor here constantly — that tells you something.
The road down to the beach winds through the national park and the views on the way down are stunning — take your time and stop for photos. The beach itself is calm and relatively sheltered from wind, making the water exceptionally clear. Sea turtle sightings are common here during summer.
Important note: the descent to the beach is steep with a lot of steps. Not ideal with small children or buggies. But if you can manage the walk, it is absolutely worth it.
Cape Greco is not a single beach but a dramatic rocky coastline at the southeastern tip of Cyprus, part of a protected national forest park. There are no sunbeds, no beach bars and no crowds. What you get instead is some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the whole country — sea caves, natural arches, blowholes and swimming spots that you essentially have to yourself.
The famous sea caves here are the ones you see on every boat trip from Ayia Napa. From the land you can look down into the caves from the cliff edges, or climb down to small rocky coves and swim directly into them. The water clarity is extraordinary — 20+ metres visibility on a calm day.
There are hiking trails throughout the national park that connect to Konnos Bay and beyond. The "Love Bridge" natural arch and the "Blue Lagoon" viewpoint are both worth finding. Come here on a rented buggy or scooter — it's one of the best drives on the island.
Every beach in Ayia Napa is public and free to access. Sunbeds and umbrellas cost around €5–€15 per day depending on the beach. You can always lay your own towel on the sand — nobody will move you.
The popular beaches fill up fast in peak season. Arrive by 9am at Nissi Beach to guarantee a good spot with a sunbed. By 11am in high summer it can be three people deep.
Water temperature in Cyprus ranges from around 22°C in May to 28°C in August. Even in October the sea is warmer than most European summer beaches. May, June, September and October are the sweet spot — beautiful weather, warm sea, significantly fewer crowds.
Almost every beach has jet skis, banana boats, parasailing, paddle boards and more. Prices are fairly standardised across the beaches. Always check what's included before you pay and agree the price before you get on anything.
Blue Flag is an internationally recognised award for beaches that meet strict standards for water quality, environmental management, safety and facilities. Ayia Napa has 14 Blue Flag beaches — more than almost anywhere in the Mediterranean. It means the water here is consistently tested and certified clean.
